In the IT world, terms are often thrown around. DevOps is a perfect example. Chances are you have heard the term in a meeting, a job vacancy, or an article, but what does it actually mean? Don't worry: you really don't need to be a developer to understand this. In this blog, we explain what DevOps is, why companies are so focused on it, and how it ensures that software is developed faster and smarter.

What does DevOps mean?

DevOps is a combination of development and business activities (operations). According to Microsoft, DevOps is about bringing together people, processes, and technology to deliver value to customers faster and smarter.

What does a DevOps team look like?

In the past, developers, IT operations, security, and testing often worked separately from each other. One built something, another had to manage it, and someone else checked afterward if everything worked properly (and securely). As you can guess, this often led to misunderstandings or delays.

With DevOps, companies try to break down those walls between teams. As a result, teams collaborate more often, get involved earlier in the process, and share a collective responsibility for the final result. This ultimately leads to faster solutions, better collaboration, fewer errors, and software that runs more stably and reliably.

What is the difference between DevOps and Agile?

Agile and DevOps are often mentioned in the same breath, but they are not exactly the same thing. The Agile method is a flexible way of developing software where collaboration, quick deliveries, and customer feedback are key. It is a way of working where teams are continuously improving and delivering value to the customer.

DevOps is an approach where the collaboration between development and operations teams is improved. Teams use tools and smart processes to better automate their various tasks (source: Amazon Web Services (AWS)).

Why are so many companies enthusiastic about DevOps?

The popularity of DevOps is not just a hype. In fact, Atlassian's DevOps Trends Survey shows that 99% of respondents indicate that DevOps has had a positive impact on their organization. And that makes complete sense. Technology is changing at lightning speed. Companies want to roll out new features faster, solve problems (before customers even notice them), and respond better to what users need. DevOps helps perfectly with this and can make it happen without sacrificing quality.

Security also plays a bigger role within DevOps today. While security used to be checked only at the very end, it is now increasingly integrated directly during development. And that is highly important in an era where cyber threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
